Chapter Four
“I still don’t see it,” Alex complained from the back of the car. “Is the baby that little bean looking thing in the center of the picture?”
Glancing back at him from the front seat, I leaned over to point out the baby. Asher grabbed my shoulder and set me back to a normal seated position in my seat. “Nope. You’re not sitting like that while I’m driving. You have precious cargo in your body and you need to be sitting properly in case we get into an accident.”
Laughter broke free of my lips. “I was only leaning back to show Alex…”
Asher shook his head and interrupted. “I’m not taking any chances. You can sit just like you are until we reach Baby Megastore. When we are parked, you can show him…again.”
“Hey!” Alex complained. “It’s not my fault I can’t see it. All these pictures have on them is static and a little circle thing with a dot inside it.”
“Alex, it’s right there…” I turned to point it out to him, but Asher grabbed me again, forcing me to face forward in the proper seated position.
He glared at me and I glared back. “Seriously? Is this what my life is going to be like for the rest of the pregnancy? Why don’t you just hire bodyguards to watch over me when you aren’t home? Who knows? I might try to lift my hairbrush and hurt myself.”
“Don’t tempt me,” he said.
Pulling into the parking lot, he chose a spot close to the store and turned off the car. “There. Now you can show the blind man in the back seat where our little bundle of joy is in the pictures.”
An oomph escaped Asher’s lips when Alex smacked him upside the head. “Shut up, asswipe. Nobody asked you anything.” Turning to me he asked, “So where is it?”
After unbuckling my seatbelt, I turned around and pointed the baby out. “It’s that little dot right there. You can’t really see much, but that’s it.”
“Oh,” he said, angling the picture right and left. “Yeah, I don’t see it, but I’ll take your word for it.”
I laughed as I got out of the car, and the three of us walked arm in arm up to the store. Once inside, both men disappeared into different aisles and I was left alone to peruse the store for the second time that day.
I’d already looked over all the furniture and clothes, so I headed straight for the book section and picked up a few books that went over what to expect during the pregnancy. Flipping through, I smiled at the illustrations and pictures that showed what our baby looked like in its current week. It kind of looked like a little kidney bean with four buds that would eventually grow into arms and legs.
As I approached the front counter, I noticed the twins coming up to meet me from either side of the store. In Asher’s arms were loads of boxes containing all sorts of monitoring equipment for baby safety.
